My head guy said to use 999-16 springs for anything over 6000 rpms but my motor guy said i need something bigger i will let you know what i use

I will definitely check that valve pattern. One of the reasons that I had checked the spring pressure as my drag race buddy suspected the same thing. I have never heard of that. I learned something today already so I don't have to worry about learning anything else. They are the ones that match with my cam quest software. My motor guy said when he built it he would like something a little stiffer than what I had. When I bought it all is was the cam kit, Everything came together. What would you suggest for spring pressures? If you want details I will pm them to you. Air cleaner on and off not a huge difference. Seems worse with my "normal style" air cleaner, and backfires a little more. The miss has went away for the most part with jetting. It only backfired about 3 times at gussies, which is a lot less than all the way down the track. It has also gained some rpms with the jetting as well. And yes it is still a dog. It will pull hard to 5500 to 6000 then you might as well shift, and it will come up to around the same. Grab third and right back to 5k. Third gear is wear the motor actually feels like it is being worked a little. Plugs are black with heavy soot. I have went from a 92 jet front and back, and right now I am at 84 front and back. I suspect that they are black from idling around. I have never stood on it and shut it off to check. From what I read about carbs this is more and likely from not having a power valve and the jets would be on the heavy side for mid rang power and tuned for the top end. Which I still can not get too. Last year it would pop and bang pretty good first pass and by the time I had some heat in the motor would not do it. Also changing over from VP fuel to Rocket Brand made it worse. Later jenks By the way Lewistown was a pretty good show other than the fact I got home at 4 this morning. I did not race, but their rules are pretty open allowing fast trucks down in the lower classes. Pretty much a tire size race Grampa's toy - almost rolled broke some suspension pieces Bipolar express - almost rolled went over the timing lights at a 90 degree angle in the air Darren wilson - almost rolled and broke Tims red truck layed down some stellar passes Marty york layed down some good passes as well.

I think 84s are way to small for your motor 92s sounds about right. My sv1 is set off if you want to try it. backfire could be from being to lean try diff air bleeds so you can get the idle leanded out . most of the time backfire through the exhaust is carb issue.Value timing backfires through the intake.

I have an old school dominator on there. I originally went from 92 up to 96 and made it worse, that is why I went the other way. By air bleads you are talking about the idle screws on the metering block correct? Like I said I am no carb expert, or motor expert for that matter. I know enough to get me in a pickle but never get out of one. This is my first go round with an all out race motor and it is showing me how little I actually know.
Also was told that I should not run my fuel pressure as high as I do. I run right at nine. Going to drop it down to 7.

gotcha. Mine are not the screw in ones so I don't know how I would change them out.
I got the other carb to give it a shot. Probably go out and mess with it a little tomorrow, but I have some other things that I need to do so don't know how deep I will be able to get into it. Then maybe race next sat or spend some more time working on it and then racing sunday at the peatmonster.

What a long weekend.
Raced Saturday at Springville, IA. Had a good time and laid down some solid passes for me anyway, not so competitive with the guys in the classes I was running. I ran two classes as to get a feel for the truck with the new carb. The carb was definitely part of the problem. The truck had a whole new attitude. First pass was a 3.8 for a 150' run, by the end of the day I was running a 3.2. Keep in mind I am not a drag racer, nor is my truck set up for it. Just out for fun. Got a good feel for the truck. Used some pointers I got from McQ earlier in the year and helped a ton.
I thought that I was ready for the peatmonster race. I had a few things to fix and some minor carb tuning to do. Got everything set up and ready to go. Left the line hard and through the gears in a mad rush and then it fell on its face. A different falling on its face than before. Second pass was the same. I entered two classes today as well just to get a feel for the truck. In between I ran into mj and discussed what was going on. Changed to 38" skinny's and headed out for two more passes. It ran a little better but fell at the end again. Thinking about the conversation with mj who thought I was running out of fuel, was right. The top of my fuel cell had collapsed. Now she is not getting enough fuel. So I need a better vent. And possibly a bigger pump.
So I think I got it figured out. Thanks for all the help. Thanks MJ for helping me out. She is running a lot harder, and had a smile on my face all weekend.

Great Jenks!!!! I'm glad your making forward progress. I have been equally as stumped with your truck. I'm glad you nailed it down to the carb. Now with it sucking all that fuel it's collapsing your fuel cell!!!! WOW THAT"S RUNNING HARD!!! :oLOL
Well glad to see you made two days of racing, had fun and made progress!!
Can't wait to see it run in person!! Are you going to Brookfields, Mo or Indy? Both of those races have drags & bogs so you can fine tune your dragging skills before you put the "BOSS" in the deep stuff!!

I am at the peat monster the day of brookfield. I am leading the points and already missed one race due to work. Would like to go, but fit into class 3 there with skinned out trucks.
As far as Indy. That is probably a hell no. I fit into class three. where the minimum weight is like 3500 lbs with a big block. Not my fat 6,000. I will be way outclassed.
Maybe I will make some changes and get some parts to get me into some lower classes at the big races.

what screws me at indy is the registration and current license plate. That will never happen.
mufflers, carb, interior for brookfield.
I will play by the rules, but one thing that I never get. Yes I have the windows and door panels removed in my truck. A custom made dash that is heavier than the stock one that was in it, plus a 6 pt cage. Which bumps me up because you cannot do. I have a full box. But you can body swap and flat bed. Which costs money. Interior removal is free. Like I said I don't mind playing by the rules, but just never understand that. I don't expect any exceptions just for me.
I simply like the look of a full bodied truck. And being the stubborn ass that I am don't want to loose the look. What I think I am going to do is skin the box out and flat bed it. Best of both worlds.

They don't make sense!! We just build our trucks to them. Be cautious because what your planning with your box can land you up yet another class!!Yes ouch. It has to meet requirements!!

the registration thing is what bumps me from class 2 to class 3. They are running nmro rules right? Do you have to be a nmro member to receive prize money? Not that I would be receiving any. It is in their rules just kind of hard to understand.
I don't mind racing if I have a fighting chance, but if I have to run class 3 then no way.

I've never had an NMRO number. And won it several years ago, got 3rd last year.
What would it take to get you ion their classes? Going to have to do the work anyway right? Throw a cut up dash in there some inner door pannel shells and what else?
You'll for sure have a good time. The racing you do is kinda secondary at Indy, so much to see, people to talk to and so many different kinds of racing going on. Always a great time if we race well or not.
It was by far the best time we had racing the last three years in a row. Brookfield Mo was sure a close second though!
