So far the major components are checking out. Compression on all cylinders is where they should be and all within a few pounds of each other. Went through the valves and reset those. Some where way out. I am leaning towards a carb issue now. I changed my snorkel setup this year and seem to be getting a lot more air. So I am going to jump jets and air bleeds. I am heading out now to go for a test run hopefully if it stays dry as I have everything unprotected until I figure out the problem. So I am down to carb. In neutral no problem spanking the rev limiter. Low range about the same. High range when I pour the coals to it is good to 5,000 and that is it, then it will backfire out of the exhaust. I think that the ignition is fine.
I am open to suggestion. I haven't checked the valve spring pressure yet, but may have to. It is a pita.

I run a pro billet msd locked out. I hit total timing at 800 rpm. Being that my motor lives in the upper range. I have tried from 35 to 42 with no changes. It seems best around the 36 total.
I ran it today with no changes. I pulled the carb apart and cleaned it all up. Checked seat pressure on the springs, all seem good. I am going to start messing with the jetting.
the joy of my job is that I won't get to do anything till next sat. so if I can't figure it out, she will stay in the shed until I do. I am tired of running half assed. It still has not shown its full potential and I just keep letting it go. No more.

Please just plug another carb on. I have a good 1000 cfm 4150 or you can take my race 1050 4500. Just try a whole new carb...sometimes that can do wonders!!!

I would hate to take your parts, cause you are probably going to need them. I am going to throw some larger jets it it. Throw some poo and the wall and see what sticks. I have a feeling that I am lean. The last time I had it screaming for a short burst I turned one of my header tubes blue. It was near the collector where my tire rubs and there is no paint there anymore. Why I noticed it. Not saying that it is the problem, but 10 minutes and a screw driver, at least it should tell me something.
I redid my intake gasket last year because of a leak. I may have to do it again. I siliconed all around each port on both sides of the gasket to prevent any leaks, but may not of done the trick.
I made some fresh roadkill on 34 this morning right next to the road to wataga. Damn deer.

Jenks turning the header blue sounds like late value timing like its firing after the ext value is opening.
Jeff I could use a bigger motor got one of them laying around. lol

I did have some valve lash that was out. I reset. No change as far as the current problem.

Roller or solid cam my last 429 did about the same thing would only go to about 5000 rpms but with no back fire couldn't figure it out so took the motor apart ate 3 lifters just trying to throw some things out for you mine was a flat tappet cam.

It would do it on occasion last year. Never would really pull that hard after 6,000. Before the first race I took it out and did a few runs. Popped on the first couple runs then last run ran like a champ like it should. Last year it popped occasionally, thought it was a heat issue. I removed my snorkel for a massive velocity stack and air cleaner. Now ever since then it really pops. Last years last race there was no issue. Sat in shed, got fresh fuel this spring.
Did change fuel brand this year since sleepy steve came through. Ran VP last year. Same octane though.

Edit: I never really sat down and fine tuned the carb. That is why I am thinking this after the few checks I have done. After talking with a few people, the more and more I think that I really am lean.
Edit: Also I know it was short on air because when I would get all four tires off the ground it wouldn't peg the rev limiter.
